Court Orders IGP To Investigate Allegations Of Murder, Gunrunning Against Alaafin of Oyo

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Suleiman Abba, has been ordered by a Federal High 

Court sitting in Ibadan on Monday to investigate allegations of crime levelled against the Alaafin 

of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.




In his ruling, Justice Ayo Emmanuel granted an order of mandamus brought before the court by 

Jacob Oluokun and Sulaiman Ishola to investigate the allegations against Mr. Adeyemi 

contained in a petition to the office of the IGP, dated March 18, 2014. The IGP then was Mr. 

Mohammed Abubakar

The petition titled: “Unprecedented criminality, flagrant human rights violations, bomb planting, 

gun running and unresolved assassinations in Oyo town, Oyo state” was delivered to the IGP’s 

office on April 17, 2014, findings revealed.

The application for mandamus with the suit No: FHC/IB/CS/54/2014 was filed at the Federal 

High court, Ibadan by counsel to the applicants, Biodun Abdur-Raheem on July 16, 2014.

In the supporting affidavit, the applicants said that the attention of the IGP was drawn to various 

incidences of crime in Oyo State, as a result of which prominent people, particularly from Isale 

Oyo, were killed via organized assassinations while others lived in continuous fear of 

impending attack.

In the written address in support of the motion on notice for mandamus, the applicants’ counsel, 
Mr. Abduraheem, said the application was in pursuant to Order 34 Rules 3(4) of Federal High 

court Rules and under the inherent jurisdiction of the Court.

Mr. Abduraheem said the applicants were community leaders and members of Isale Oyo 

Community, who were worried about the spate of murder, attempted murder, gun running and 

other heinous crimes going on without any of the culprits brought to book.

He further argued that the applicants had shown sufficient legal interest to protest and urged the 

court to grant the application as prayed and on reasons adduced.

After listening to the applicants’ counsel’s argument, Justice Emmanuel granted all the prayers sought.

Meanwhile, the Alaafin was not in court neither was he represented by a legal counsel.
