The Federal Government is planning to put an end to open defecation and the menace of public pollution by water sachets and other disposable plastic products.
The Minister of the Environment, Amina Mohammed, disclosed these during an official visit on Saturday to the Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN).
She said the present administration is committed to put an end to the undignified practice of open defecation in Nigeria by 2019, through a planned collaboration with the private sector to build toilets in all public places across the country.
The minister, also said that research institutes in Nigeria needed to be funded so that they could deliver the purpose for which they were established and contribute to national development.
"By 2019, we will see the end to plastic bags, sachet water and bottled water as wastes on the street. We hope to empower the plastic companies to collect them and recycle them so that we can turn waste to wealth. Many of our drainage channels are full of these waste items and each time there is rain, the environment is flooded because the drainage system no longer performs its functions.
