Moscow, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) The President and the Defense Ministry of Russia have confirmed the death of the crew of a Mi-8 helicopter that was shot down today in the Syrian province of Idlib, while returning to the Hmeymim airbase from Aleppo after transporting humanitarian aid.

According to the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, the pilots died heroically while trying to minimize casualties on the ground.

The five men on board were killed, including two officers of the Russian center for Truce Control and Reconciliation. The Kremlin have expressed condolences to the families of the dead pilots and military personnel.

A statement from the military said the aircraft crashed as a result of fire from the ground, while returning to its base in the province of Latakia.

A Mi-25 of the Syrian Air Force, piloted by two Russian airmen, was shot down in Palmira in July.

A Russian soldier died when an explosive device was detonated near the reconciliation center's caravan, and another serviceman died in June in similar circumstances.

Two other Russian pilots were killed in April in the city of Homs, after a Mi-28N Night Hunter attack helicopter was brought down.

The presidential spokesman Dmitri Peskov said on Monday that threats from extremists towards will not affect his country's continued fight against terrorism.

Peskov said that none of the threats, published by various media and YouTube, have had any effect on the policy of Moscow and President Vladimir Putin against this international scourge.

The Kremlin spokesman said that security organs carrying out anti-terrorist work and safeguarding the country pay due attention to these threats.

The Russian command, which is working jointly with the Syrian authorities, launched a major humanitarian operation in the city of Aleppo on Thursday, to facilitate the departure of civilians from sectors controlled by groups of irregulars fighters, through secure corridors.
